Fire safety regulations for furnishings

Summary

The Minister said he lacks power to regulate flammable furnishings in public premises, but a forthcoming Fire Services Bill will provide that power and should be circulated within a month.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether his Department have issued any regulations or orders in draft or otherwise to ensure the fire safety of the types of materials used in furnishings in premises which are frequented by the public; and, if so, if he will give details.

Ray Burke Mr. R. Burke Fianna Fáil

I have no power to make statutory regulations or orders to ensure the fire safety of materials used in furnishings in premises frequented by the public and accordingly no draft regulations or orders in this respect have been issued by my Department. A new Fire Services Bill, which I hope to introduce in the near future, will include powers to make regulations relating to the use of flammable materials.
