National aid for fisheries

Summary

Blaney urged immediate national aid amid delays to a common EC fisheries policy and severe industry difficulties. Power said existing national and EEC assistance was sufficient for now, though the matter remained under consideration.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry whether, in view of the delay in obtaining EC agreement on a common fisheries policy and of the present calamitous state of our fishery industry, he will immediately introduce national measures to aid our fisheries.

Comment on this

While I accept that parts of our fleet are experiencing difficulties at the present time, I do not consider that it is necessary to introduce special national aid measures in addition to the range of national and EEC aids already available but the matter is under active consideration.
