Bundoran Hotel fire inquiry

Summary

Burke asked whether the Government would hold the public inquiry and honour the previous Government’s commitment. O’Brien said the matter was under consideration and that a decision would be announced in due course.

Ray Burke Mr. Raphael Burke Fianna Fáil

asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to proceed with the holding of the public inquiry into the fire at the Central Hotel, Bundoran, County Donegal on 8 August 1980; if so, its terms of reference; and when he expects the first sitting to take place.

Fergus O'Brien Minister of State at the Department of the Environment (Mr. F. O'Brien) Fine Gael

I have this matter presently under consideration. A decision will be announced in due course.

Ray Burke Mr. Raphael Burke Fianna Fáil

It is unfortunate that the Minister himself did not answer this question. The Bundoran fire inquiry was a matter of considerable concern to the Minister's party when on this side of the House.

Comment on this
Edward Collins Mr. E. Collins Fine Gael

Not to the Deputy's party.

Ray Burke Mr. Raphael Burke Fianna Fáil

The previous Government laid down the terms of reference of this inquiry and the matter was on the Order Paper. Is the Minister prepared to honour the commitment to hold this inquiry?

Comment on this
Fergus O'Brien Mr. F. O'Brien Fine Gael

As I indicated, I am considering this matter and will make known my decision in due course.
