Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Embassy in Saudi Arabia.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding the proposal to build a new Irish Embassy in Riyad, Saudi Arabia, indicating, in particular, whether a contract for the building has been awarded; and, if so, to whom.

Selected firms were invited to price a schedule of rates for this project. The firm whose rates were the most favourable is co-operating with the design team in the finalisation of certain details of the project following which the contract price will be determined on the basis of their rates. A formal contract has not yet been entered into.

Is this a new procedure whereby to select a firm? Although a formal contract has not been placed I take it this firm will be favoured. What is the name of this firm and were other firms considered?

Comment on this

This is not a new procedure. This procedure was decided upon in conjunction with the Department of Finance during the period in which the Deputy was Minister for Finance. This was a complicated contract and we asked a firm of consultants to give us the names of firms which would be (1) capable of doing the job and (2) had contracts — this is something of which the Deputy is probably aware — with firms in Saudi Arabia. They came up with two contractors. We asked them to tender for various items. That was done and the lowest tenderer has gone into consultation on the details of the project.

Comment on this

I asked the Minister the name of the firm.

Comment on this

It is not usual to name firms in the House.

Comment on this

May I ask the nationality of the two firms and the national base of the firm which was asked to enter into negotiations with a view obviously to having the contract placed?

Comment on this

Both firms nominated by the consultants were Irish and the firm asked to go into consultation is also Irish.

Comment on this

And the Minister will not give the name.

Comment on this

No.
