Clondalkin Paper Mills closure

Summary

Harney challenged the refusal of her urgent question about the mill’s impending closure and 470 threatened jobs. The Chair said the question would be answered next week or could be raised on the Adjournment; Harney sought permission to do so.

It is incredible, Sir, that your office has disallowed my Private Notice Question to the Tánaiste regarding Clondalkin Paper Mills on the grounds that it lacks urgency. This mill is to close in two weeks. Surely nothing could be more urgent than the fact that 470 people will be unemployed.

The Deputy appreciates she cannot question the decision of the Ceann Comhairle on these matters.

I appreciate that, but last week a similar question to the Tánaiste was disallowed on the grounds that he had no responsibility in the matter. In view of the fact that time is running out——

I understand the Deputy has been informed that the question she tabled will be answered next week or she may seek permission to raise it on the Adjournment.

I seek that permission.
