Leitrim school staffing under Circular 24/81

Summary

Ellis sought the names of Leitrim schools losing teachers under Circular 24/81 and pressed for the county total. Boland declined to add to earlier replies because of the INTO’s planned court action, said Ellis’s estimate of ten teachers was incorrect, but provided no alternative figure.

asked the Minister for Education the names of all schools in County Leitrim that will lose a teacher as a result of circular 24/81.

I would refer the Deputy to my replies to questions on Tuesday 15 December which referred to Circular 24/81, and in particular to my reply to Question No. 7. In view of the resolution adopted at a special congress of the INTO on 14 November 1981 that the "Organisation seek a Declaration in the Courts that the Minister for Education is in breach of contract or has induced a breach of contract of teachers in National Schools", I am not in a position to add to my previous replies in relation to this matter.

Would the Minister be prepared to admit that in that county alone ten teachers will be lost in ten different schools?

Comment on this

That is actually incorrect.

What is the correct information?

Comment on this

I presume the Minister must have on his file the correct number of teachers who will be lost to the county, so I would appreciate if he would give the information to the House.

Comment on this

I am not in a position, as I said, to pass any comment other than to point out to the House that the figure stated by the Deputy is not correct.
