Delayed telephone service in Westmeath

Summary

The Department recorded the Westmeath application as received in January 1979 and cited extensive line work and engineering demands; service was expected in about a year. The Deputy disputed the date and asked for the file to be checked, while the Minister said the record was clear unless contrary evidence was provided.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in providing a telephone service for a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath as he applied over seven years ago.

Comment on this

I regret that this application which was received in 1979 cannot be met because of the substantial amount of line work required to provide service for the applicant and the large volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the district. It is expected that service will be provided in about a year.

Comment on this

According to the people involved the application has been in for longer than 1979. According to my information it has been in seven years.

My information is that it was received in 1979. If the Deputy can provide information which will assist me, I will be delighted to have the matter re-examined.

Comment on this

The two previous Ministers for Posts and Telegraphs were asked about this matter. I would appreciate it if the Minister would see if the application has been mislaid.

My information is quite clear and specific. This applicant applied for telephone service on 26 January 1979. As far as I am aware that is the position until I get evidence contrary to what I have from the Department.
