The Taoiseach said four people had been appointed to fill vacancies on An Comhairle Ealaíon and assured Yates he would oppose patronage in appointments.

The only such appointments made since the date referred to by the Deputy have been to An Comhairle Ealaíon. The following have been appointed to fill vacancies on the Council: Mr. Patrick Murphy, Mr. Robert Ballagh, Mr. Brian Friel, Mr. Proinsias Mac Aonghusa.

In view of the Taoiseach's statements in the House this time last year, as Leader of the Opposition, will he assure the House during his period in office that he will be utterly consistent in his opposition to patronage in appointments such as these?

The only appointment made by me since 9 March 1982 was that of Michael Hewson as a member of An Comhairle Leabharlanna on 11 June 1982.
