Private rented accommodation register

Summary

The Minister said he intends to extend registration to other private rented dwellings after consulting housing authorities, but gave no publication date. Asked about penalties for non-registration, he said he did not have the information to hand.

asked the Minister for the Environment when the public register of private rented accommodation, which was promised as part of the joint Fine Gael-Labour programme for Government, will be published.

Landlords of dwellings formerly controlled under the Rent Restrictions Acts and landlords of multi-dwelling units in areas in respect of which by-laws under section 70 of the Housing Act, 1966 have been made are at present required to register their dwellings with the relevant housing authorities. In accordance with the joint programme for Government, it is my intention to apply a system of registration to other categories of private rented dwellings, following necessary consultations with housing authorities on matters related to the scope of such a system and its administration and enforcement.

Will the Minister state what are the penalties on landlords who do not register?
