Ministers’ local authority membership
Several Ministers have resigned from local authorities, and others have indicated they will do so, following recent Government practice.
asked the Taoiseach whether any member of the Government is a member of a local authority; and, if so, whether he approves of their continued membership.

In accordance with the practice normally followed by Governments in recent years, the following Ministers have resigned from membership of local authorities: Minister for the Public Service, Mr. John Boland; Minister for Transport and Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, Mr. Jim Mitchell; Minister for Health and Minister for Social Welfare, Mr. Barry Desmond and Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Austin Deasy.
The following Ministers have indicated that they will be resigning: Tánaiste and Minister for the Environment, Mr. Dick Spring; Minister for Labour, Mr. Liam Kavanagh; Minister for Justice. Mr. Michael Noonan.
