Computer tape delivery costs

Summary

Taxi deliveries cost about £2,200 annually and are used for urgent runs when departmental services are unavailable; a comprehensive in-house service is not justified.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the annual cost to his Department of the use of taxis for the delivery of computer tapes from the Dundrum computer centre, Dublin, to various offices; if this work could be done just as easily and efficiently by postmen drivers employed by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Comment on this

: The annual cost of taxis for delivery of computer tapes from the Dundrum computer centre to various offices is about £2,200.

Taxis are used for the service mentioned when delivery is urgently required and the Department's own delivery services are not available.

The cost of providing a comprehensive Departmental service to meet all delivery requirements of the computer centre would not be warranted.
