Ministers’ resignation from local authorities

Summary

Molloy asked whether measures should prevent an Environment Minister from retaining local authority membership after appointment. The Taoiseach said resignation delays had increased over time but would not be allowed to drift further.

Does the Taoiseach not consider it appropriate that some measures be introduced to ensure that in future a Minister for the Environment may not continue his membership of a local authority following his appointment to the Department?

Comment on this

There is an obvious difference.

Comment on this

With regard to the resignation of Ministers, that period has tended to drift somewhat over the years. We do not intend to allow it to drift any further.

Comment on this

The Taoiseach applies very different standards.
