Cattle numbers by age and type

Summary

O’Keeffe asked for milch cow, suckler cow and age-specific cattle numbers in 1982 and 1983. Barrett said the latest available figures were for December 1982 and would circulate them alongside comparable December 1981 and June 1981–82 data.

Ned O'Keeffe Mr. E. O'Keeffe Fianna Fáil

asked the Taoiseach the number of milch cows; suckler cows; one-year-old cattle, and two-year-old cattle in the country in 1982; and in 1983.

Nuala Fennell Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach (Mr. Barrett, Fine Gael

Dún Laoghaire): Two livestock enumerations are undertaken annually in June and December respectively. The June enumeration covers the situation when cattle numbers are, more or less, at their peak whereas the opposite situation is monitored in December. I propose to circulate a statement giving the available information for 1 December 1982, the latest available, together with comparable data for 1 December 1981. The statement also includes the June figures for 1981 and 1982.

Following is the statement:

Estimated number of cattle in the State on 1 December, 1981 and 1982 and on 1 June 1981 and 1982, classified by type.
