Agricultural food imports by country

Summary

The Minister reported 1982 food and live-animal imports of £549.4 million from EEC countries and £203.9 million from non-EEC countries, with a country-by-country statement to follow. He gave figures for the USA, Canada and Thailand but could not identify the products involved.

(Limerick West) asked the Taoiseach the value of agricultural imports from non-EEC member states in 1982; and the amount from each country.

Nuala Fennell Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach (Mr. Barrett, Fine Gael

Dún Laoghaire): I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together. In the official trade statistics imports are not analysed according to economic sector of origin. However, import data are available for the category “Food and live animals”. In 1982 imports under this category were valued at £549.4 million from EEC countries and £203.9 million from non-EEC countries. I propose to circulate a statement showing the values for individual countries.

Following is the statement:

Ray Burke Mr. R. Burke Fianna Fáil

The figure of £203.9 million from non-EEC countries seems particularly high. I know the Minister is circulating a statement but could he give one or two of the larger figures?

Comment on this

(Dún Laoghaire): USA £66.5 million; Canada £18.7 million; Thailand £10.7 million.

Could we have an indication of the products involved?

Comment on this

(Dún Laoghaire): I am sorry, I do not have that information.
