Salaried public defenders scheme

Summary

De Rossa asked whether salaried public defenders could replace privately engaged solicitors and save money. The Minister said he had no proposal under consideration and treated it as a separate policy question.

Will the Minister state if his Department have given any consideration to the possibility of replacing the present system with a salaried public defenders scheme which would eliminate the employment of private solicitors by the Department?

Comment on this

(Limerick East): I have no such proposals under consideration.

Will the Minister not agree that there would possibly be a saving of money to the State if such a scheme were introduced?

Comment on this

(Limerick East): It is a separate question. It refers to policy in general rather than the information sought in the questions.
