Kenmare Products closure and machinery spending

Summary

O'Leary challenged the refusal of a Private Notice Question about Kenmare Products' imminent closure and more than 100 job losses, citing alleged malpractice in public spending on machinery. The Chair upheld the ruling and suggested an ordinary question.

John O'Leary Mr. J. O'Leary Fianna Fáil

Would you explain why you disallowed my Private Notice Question regarding the imminent closure of Kenmare Products in Kenmare on 23 November at a loss of employment for more than 100 families in the area?

Thomas J. Fitzpatrick An Ceann Comhairle Fine Gael

I considered your question and ruled it out of order because it did not meet the criteria for a Private Notice Question. My secretary gave the reasons to the Deputy. I know you are an orderly Deputy but to pursue the matter here further would be disorderly.

This is also a matter of urgent national importance because there is great concern about serious malpractices as far as public expenditure is concerned.

Are you aware that there are allegations of grave malpractices in public expenditure in regard to machinery for this industry?

I have ruled the question out of order but if the Deputy wishes to have a chat with me——
