Jim Mitchell Mr. J. Mitchell Fine Gael

The relevant academic training is provided in Ireland by Cork Regional Technical College which operates under the auspices of the Cork Vocational Education Committee. It is a matter for the various shipping companies to provide the sea time requirements of maritime trainees.

In the aftermath of the liquidation of Irish Shipping Limited, the Youth Employment Agency and the Irish Chamber of Shipping have, in an arrangement with the liquidator, continued until next June the training of those cadets formerly employed by Irish Shipping Limited. The future position regarding the cadets in question is at present receiving consideration.

My Department conduct the relevant examinations for Irish certificates of competency for seamen.
