Repeal of the Vagrancy Act

Summary

Only part of section 4 of the Act remains in force. The Government will consider reform after receiving the Law Reform Commission’s recommendations.

(Limerick East): As the Deputy is no doubt aware, only one section — section 4 — of that Act is in force here, and not all of that section. The Law Reform Commission are examining the law on vagrancy at present and, I understand, have done quite an amount of work on it. The question of amending the law in this area will be considered by the Government when the commission's final recommendations come to hand.
