Question Time duration

Summary

Brady disputed the Chair’s decision to move to priority questions before 3.45 p.m. The Chair said Question Time need only conclude by that time, and agreed they could review the Standing Order later.

Thomas J. Fitzpatrick An Ceann Comhairle Fine Gael

We are now moving to priority questions. I am calling Question No. 6.

Comment on this

On a point of order, we are moving to priority questions eight minutes before the normal time. I assume Question Time will continue until 3.45 p.m.?

No, it will continue for 15 minutes from now.

The altered Standing Order stipulates that Question Time shall be from 2.30 p.m. to 3.45 p.m.

What it says, and this is how it has been interpreted, is that Question Time shall commence at 2.30 p.m. and shall conclude not later than 3.45 p.m.

Comment on this

That may be so. I have looked at the Standing Order and the interpretation is not very clear.

I know, but in cases like this somebody has to interpret Standing Orders.

My understanding was that Question Time would continue until 3.45 p.m.

No, that is not so. At least that is not my interpretation.

Comment on this

Perhaps we can have a look at it later?

Certainly. I am calling Question No. 6.
