GMS funding

Summary

The Minister acknowledged health boards’ concerns about funding the General Medical Services later in the year and said spending controls and funding arrangements were under review.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the concern of the health boards that they will be unable to fund the GMS after the month of October this year; if he will allocate extra moneys to the health boards and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that health boards are concerned about the funding of the General Medical Services (Payment) Board later this year.

As I indicated in reply to a question from the Deputy on 1 June 1985, the question of the measures that might be taken to restrict expenditure by the board to the 1985 budgeted level is being examined.

I will be reviewing the arrangements for funding the board throughout the remainder of the year in the light of the outcome of this examination.
