Michael Moynihan Minister of State at the Department of Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry (Mr. M. Moynihan) Labour Party

Concerns about unapproved accommodation have been expressed from time to time and this matter is being continually monitored by my Department. In my view, Bord Fáilte approval of tourist accommodation confers a very real competitive advantage on the premises concerned. Approved operators are, for example, eligible to avail of capital improvement grants and to participate in all the board's promotional activities. The Bord Fáilte sign of approval is a clear indication to the tourist of standards and service. Nevertheless, in the light of recent complaints I am again examining this whole question to see whether there is scope for addressing the matter under existing consumer protection legislation.
