asked the Minister for Education the total number of teachers in primary schools and the number who retired before reaching retiring age in each of the years 1980 to 1985, inclusive.

There are at present 21,130 national teachers in primary schools.

The information requested by the Deputy in regard to the numbers of national teachers who left the teaching service before reaching compulsory retiring age in the period 1980 to 1985 is as follows:
