Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Future of Carysfort College.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the plans he has set in motion for the future of Carysfort teacher training college.

The question of planning for the future of Carysfort teacher training college is under active consideration in my Department and I expect to be in a position to make an announcement concerning the matter at an early date.

The Minister will remember that six to eight weeks ago we had a debate in this House on the issue of Carysfort College. At that time the Minister said — and we were delighted to hear it — that there was an exciting, dynamic future ahead for Carysfort. When can the staff and the management board of Carysfort expect to hear the plans of this exciting dynamic future promised by the Government?

I detect a note of sarcasm in Deputy O'Rourke's reference to my hopes for Carysfort. I hope that is not so because I thought she shared my hopes for that institution. We have been working hard on the preliminary planning for the future use of this college. I have been in touch with the principal to indicate to her that I hope to have consultations started in the next ten days or so. If Deputy O'Rourke has submissions to make about the structures we propose setting up in regard to future uses, her proposals will be very welcome.

I thank the Minister but let me remind him that I made them at great length in the House in the debate on Carysfort. Will the Minister's plans have an element of teacher training in them? This was the main import of our debate on that occasion.

The purpose of our discussions is to devise plans for the future use of Carysfort. This is now getting under way. We are setting up structures to start examining various proposals.

That concludes questions. The Chair allowed Deputy Albert Reynolds to put a Private Notice Question to the Tánaiste and Minister for Energy. Will he please read the question?
