Television licence fee increase
RTE sought a £2 increase in both colour and monochrome licence fees, but the Minister rejected it, citing RTE’s satisfactory finances and other State bodies’ charges.
asked the Minister for Communications the proposals, if any, he has for an increase in the cost of a television licence; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Comment on this
RTE have sought an increase of £2 on both colour and monochrome television licence fees. Having regard to RTE's current satisfactory financial position and the fact that the charges for services provided by other commercial State-sponsored bodies are being held at 1986 levels or have been reduced, I cannot see any justification for an increase in television licence fees at this time and am, therefore, refusing the application for an increase.
