Compensation for controlled explosion damage

Summary

The Minister said property damage from controlled explosions is compensated ex gratia when the suspect object contains no explosive device. Asked about a specific car-damage case, he said he lacked the information and such details are not usually disclosed in the House.

asked the Minister for Defence the arrangements which exist for compensating persons whose property may be damaged by controlled explosions set off by the Army while it is carrying out bomb disposal activities or dealing with suspect devices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Comment on this

(Limerick West): Claims for compensation for damage to property arising from controlled explosions carried out by the Defence Forces are settled by my Department on an ex gratia basis where the suspect object does not contain an explosive device.

Is the Minister aware that following an incident involving a car parked close to Henry Street on 20 April 1985, which case was reported in the media on 26 November 1987, the owner was obliged to bring court proceedings? Can he tell us whether an ex gratia application was made in that instance?

(Limerick West): I do not have that information but it is not usual to disclose that kind of information in the House.
