Heavy transport helicopter acquisition

The Minister said there were no plans to acquire Super Puma helicopters, as existing Air Corps aircraft could meet relief and likely military transport needs.

asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has for the acquisition of super puma heavy transport helicopters, a requirement which was needed during the harsh winter of 1982 and which would also be required for air lifting the Army ranger wing to counter terrorist operations.

Michael J. Noonan Minister for Defence (Mr. Noonan, Fianna Fáil

Limerick West): There are no plans to acquire helicopters of a larger capacity than the Dauphin. Relief operations in harsh winter conditions can be met by the helicopters at present operated by the Air Corps. I am satisfied that the Air Corps have the capability to transport military personnel in any likely security operation.
