Tomás MacGiolla Tomás Mac Giolla Question Workers Party

247 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the steps, if any, he is taking to assist the parents of 1,200 children in Cherry Orchard, Dublin 10, who have no primary school and who must bus their children to six different schools; if he has considered the idea of a special grant to this disadvantaged area as they do not qualify for free school transport; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Seamus Brennan Minister for Education (Mr. S. Brennan) Fianna Fáil

I would refer the Deputy to my predecessor's reply to Question No. 152 of 5 November 1991, which addressed this matter.

I would further add that all of the schools then mentioned, as having Cherry Orchard children in attendance, have already been granted disadvantaged status and as such are in receipt of extra teaching resources and extra funding to meet the particular needs of the children concerned.
