Written Answers. - Provisional Driving Licence Applicants.

Liam Hyland Mr. Hyland Question Fianna Fáil

89 Mr. Hyland asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that applicants for a provisional driving licence in the category B class must also make a separate application for category W which involves the applicant paying a double fee of £24; and the steps, if any, he will take to correct this anomaly. Brendan Howlin Minister for the Environment (Mr. Howlin) Labour Party

An applicant is entitled to a provisional driving licence for both categories B and W on the basis of one application and for one fee. Where an application is made to have an additional category added to an existing licence, no additional fee is normally payable. I understand, however, that some licensing authorities issue, instead, a new licence for the full two year period, for which a fee is payable. I have arranged for an instruction to issue requiring licensing authorities to adopt a uniform procedure under which no additional fee would be payable where an additional category is added to an existing licence for the unexpired period of the licence.
