26 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, she will take to provide a remedial teacher for Caherelly, Cloverfield, Herberstown and Patrickswell, Lough Gur national schools in County Limerick in view of the fact that there has been a need for such a teacher in this area for several years. I propose to take Questions Nos. 26, 111 and 112 together.
I am not in a position at present to make additional remedial teacher posts available to the schools mentioned by the Deputies.
Earlier this year, I announced the allocation of an additional 55 remedial teacher posts to primary schools. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need following recommendations from my Department's Primary Inspectorate. Account was also taken of data submitted by the applicant schools.
This allocation brought the total number of remedial teachers now in place in the primary sector to 1,188.
Unfortunately, the schools mentioned by the Deputies were not successful on this occasion.
I would point out to Deputy O'Malley that both Herberstown and Patrickswell national schools already benefit from an existing shared remedial teacher service.
I am keeping the question of further appointments in this area under regular review. I can assure that the needs of all the schools in question will be taken fully into account as part of this process.
