246 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice the plans, or proposals, if any, she has to extend the capacity of the prison on Spike Island, County Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18486/96]

I have no proposals at this time to provide additional prison places at Fort Mitchel Prison. However, the Deputy will be aware that the Government approved in January and July 1996 my proposals for the provisions of over 800 additional places in the overall prison system. Work is progressing satisfactorily on all projects under the accelerated programme for the provision of additional prison places.
