Competition and DNA legislation

Summary

Willie O’Dea revisited the consumer and competition Bill, asking about ministerial responsibility, and also asked about a national DNA database. The Taoiseach confirmed both measures were expected during the current session, with responsibilities set out on publication.

The Taoiseach mentioned that the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Richard Bruton, would pilot the Bill through the House but that there would be a role for the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Deputy Rabbitte. Media ownership goes to the heart of our democracy and perhaps the Taoiseach can give us an indication of the role of the Minister, Deputy Rabbitte.

When will the Government publish the legislation providing for a national DNA database?

That will happen in this session. When the Bill is published, the responsibilities of the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will be laid out.
