Primary school capitation grants

Summary

Deputy Aylward presses for increased capitation grants for rural primary schools, arguing the current funding model disadvantages small schools. The Tánaiste says he cannot promise a budget decision but that funding support is under review.

The programme for Government contains a commitment to an increase in primary school capitation grants. I have been contacted by several teachers from small, rural-based schools near Carlow and Kilkenny. They strongly believe the current funding model is unfair with the amount of money paid based on student numbers. Rural schools are most disadvantaged under the current system. Will the Government and the Minister commit to an increase in capitation grants in this year's budget?

Simon Coveney The Tánaiste Fine Gael

I cannot make a commitment in respect of the budget but the Taoiseach answered this question comprehensively in recent weeks. This is one of many areas where we are looking at improving funding supports for schools. The Deputy will have to wait for the budget to get the details.
