Parliamentary language on honesty

Summary

The Chair objected to the Taoiseach's use of the word 'dishonest' and asked that it be withdrawn, leading to a brief exchange over acceptable language. The Taoiseach eventually substituted a softer formulation.

That concludes questions on promised legislation.

It is really not in order or in keeping with the traditions of the House to accuse Members of dishonesty. I think it goes a little bit beyond the normal political charge.

Leo Varadkar The Taoiseach Fine Gael

If I may, I would like to withdraw the term dishonest in favour of the term untrue.

Comment on this

I do not think that is allowable either under the Standing Order.
