Home energy retrofit funding

Summary

Deputy Michael Collins asked whether the better energy programme and related schemes would keep receiving funding to support home retrofits. The Minister said the budget is sufficient and demand is high, with plans to scale the schemes up.

Page 128 of the programme for Government states, in respect of energy and housing, the Government will invest in the better energy programme for up to 170,000 households during the lifetime of the programme. As of the end of May, it appears that the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland's budget for 2019 is committed. This could have a negative effect on the insulation and retrofitting of homes. Will the Government ensure sufficient funding is available for the remainder of 2019 so schemes such as the warmers homes scheme and other energy-saving schemes will continue in west Cork and not be restrained because of a lack of funding?

Richard Bruton Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Fine Gael

I assure the Deputy that a very good budget has been made available. It will be managed so we can meet the commitments. It is very encouraging to see very high demand for these schemes. One of the challenges we will be working on will be to show how we can scale those up and develop new models that are capable of being scaled up because of the levels of interest and need. We are putting a lot of thought into the future rolling out of retrofitting right across the country.
