Mobile phones in the Chamber

Summary

Deputy Ruth Coppinger complained that phones were ringing during contributions and asked the Chair to remind Members to switch them off. The Chair agreed, and the exchange became a brief back-and-forth over respect for the Chair and parliamentary decorum.

On a point of order, could the Ceann Comhairle ask people to turn off their phones while in the Chamber? One rang twice during my contribution at Leaders' Questions, as well as three times yesterday.

Nobody should have their phones turned on.

We all have accidents but this is persistent. I am sure Deputies will not miss clients ringing them. They should just turn their phones off for a while.

Comment on this

There is no need to be smart with the Ceann Comhairle like that.

Deputies should just turn their phones off. It is rude when people are speaking.

The Ceann Comhairle is in charge and the Chair should be respected.
