Perjury law commencement

Summary

Deputy Naughten asked when the new perjury legislation would be commenced. The Tánaiste said he had checked and expected commencement within weeks.

On behalf of the Regional Group, I echo the comments of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle regarding the staff working in the Houses.

My colleagues in the Regional Group and I worked closely with the Government to pass the Criminal Justice (Perjury and Related Offences) Act, which sends a clear message to anyone engaged in legal proceedings that they must tell the truth. When commenced, the legislation will mean fines of up to €100,000 or up to ten years' imprisonment for lying in court. It was signed into law by an tUachtarán last month but it still requires a commencement order from the Minister for Justice. When will this vital legislation be commenced?

I spoke to the Secretary General of the Department about that legislation last week and it is imminent. It will be commenced within a matter of weeks.
