National herd reduction claim

Summary

Deputy Healy-Rae alleged the Taoiseach and Agriculture Minister had supported a 19% reduction in the national herd and warned about food jobs. A heated back-and-forth followed, with the Taoiseach repeatedly demanding the quote and rejecting the claim as untrue.

The Taoiseach has been quoted as being in favour of a reduction in the national herd. Without accounting for all carbon tax that farmers are sequestering-----

Where was I quoted?

Comment on this

He was quoted as being in favour of the reduction.

Comment on this

Where?

Comment on this

The Taoiseach was quoted, as was the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine. He can go and find it but it is a fact that he was quoted as saying that. This does not account for all the carbon that farmers are sequestering already. Does the Taoiseach realise that the Government is going to jeopardise the thousands of food processing jobs in this country, which provide quality food for Irish people and people all over the world? The Taoiseach has been quoted. I would not raise it but it is out there.

Produce the quote.

Comment on this

It is out there. The Taoiseach and the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine said-----

Produce it.

Comment on this

-----they are going to reduce the national herd by 19%.

Comment on this

Produce it.

Comment on this

I did not make it up.

Comment on this

You did.

Comment on this

You should realise what you are doing if you do that.

Deputy Healy-Rae's time is up. Members should speak through the Chair.

Comment on this

I apologise, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle. I cannot believe the disinformation.

Comment on this

It is in the papers.

Comment on this

It is in the papers, man. I remember the Deputy asked me where we got the evidence base on non-compliance and so on, and we got that subsequently in terms of other issues. Now the Deputy has produced something here but he cannot tell me where he got the quote.

Comment on this

You are quoted widely.

Through the Chair, please.

Comment on this

I am not quoted and I challenge you-----

Comment on this

It was in the farming papers.

Comment on this

I challenge the Deputy, through the Chair, to produce the quote where I said I am in favour of a reduction of the herd because I never said it.

Comment on this

The Minister, Deputy McConalogue, said it as well.

Comment on this

I am not in favour-----

Comment on this

I did not make it up, man. It is out there.

Comment on this

It is not good enough that the Deputy would say something that is untrue. He should withdraw it.

Comment on this

The Taoiseach should disprove me if it is wrong.

Comment on this

Shut the-----

Comment on this

Others are writing. I did not write it.

Comment on this

The Deputy cannot come in here and make everything up every day.

Comment on this

I did not make it up any day.

Comment on this

The Deputy made it up.

Comment on this

It is unfair of the Taoiseach to say that I am making up things here every day.

Comment on this

You just did.

Comment on this

I came in here to speak about Tralee hospital. Did I make that up?

Comment on this

Yes.

Comment on this

I made it up about Tralee General Hospital.

Comment on this

No. The Deputy made up the quotation in relation to the reduction of the national herd.
