Home help staffing shortages

Summary

Martin Kenny raised severe shortages in home help hours and staff across Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal, saying services were failing despite allocated hours. A Minister of State said the HSE was recruiting and invited the Deputy to bring specific cases for follow-up.

I raise the issue of home help hours across the country, but particularly in my constituency. We have serious problems with people who have been allocated home help hours on the recommendation of the district nurse. They are allocated three calls per day of half an hour or an hour each, seven days per week, but staff cannot be got. No one can get anyone to work in the service. He was not specific but I am taking it to be there.

The HSE is continually recruiting. If particular issues have been brought to the Deputy's attention, he might come back to me on them and I can follow up with the HSE in the region.
