Ukraine and Board of Peace
Ruth Coppinger shifted to Ukraine and Gaza, accusing the Taoiseach of selective opposition to dictators and asking whether he would join a Board of Peace. The Taoiseach said Government backed Ukraine, criticised opposition votes against support for Ukraine, and reiterated that Ireland’s main focus in the Middle East was contributing to peace.
We are here to question the Taoiseach and Government. The Taoiseach is not here to question us in this slot.

You will never be in government. You will never have to worry about it.

I have absolutely nothing to answer for in relation to protesting against dictators, including the Iranian dictator, against whom I have been on many protests, and including Putin - I have been outside that embassy more times than any Government members have. I do not need to be selective. The Taoiseach is selective about who is a dictator. He has imposed sanctions against Iran but nothing against Israel which has been genociding the people of Palestine for over two and a half years.
Is the Taoiseach going on the Board of Peace? Is he so craven that he has not even got the spine to clearly state he would not take any part in such a board? He has had over a week to answer that question. The reality is there is a civil war, in effect, going on in cities in the US. My faith in humanity is restored by the ordinary Americans who are rooting and standing up for their neighbours and pushing Trump back. He has had to push back.

It would be nice to have a bit of solidarity on a St. Patrick's Day from the Taoiseach.

Could I first of all say that yesterday in the House, Government sought sanction for a loan for Ukraine? The Deputy was not there to vote but her colleagues voted against that. We support peace-----

St. Patrick's Day, please.

You are not answering the question.

-----and if you do not like it, that is your problem. The bottom line is this. The Deputy and her colleagues have been consistent on Ukraine. They will preface remarks by saying "We're against Putin, blah, blah, blah" but move on quickly.

You are attacking Ukrainians who live here. We are defending Ukrainians.

The Taoiseach is the one cutting them.

Deputy Murphy voted against €90 billion for Ukraine that Europe wanted to give to support the ordinary people of Ukraine to weather the appalling assault by Russia. That is his position.

Because the Government voted down the amendments that said it could not be used for weapons.

You always find an excuse. I want to say this. In terms of our fundamental principles, we do not compromise. We have had a long historic relationship with the United States. It is family and the migratory experience. The Irish built America, along with others.

I asked about the Board of Peace.

We have made it clear with European colleagues that our main interest is in Gaza and the Middle East in terms of contributing to peace.

Are you going on the Board of Peace?
