Future of Cork’s Glen prison

Summary

Thomas Gould said plans to demolish the old prison in The Glen reneged on commitments to preserve it for community, educational and historical purposes. The Taoiseach responded by citing northside investment and hospital and road projects, while the Chair ended the disorderly exchange.

The Taoiseach is a Cork man like myself. He knows The Glen area well. He should remember that back in 2013 the people of The Glen objected and were against the building of a new prison in The Glen. They were given commitments at that time that the old prison would not be used as another prison and that it would be used for education, the community and historical purposes because Thomas Kent was executed there and buried there for years. The Government now plans to knock the old prison, reneging on promises that were given to the people of The Glen and surrounding areas of St. Luke's, Dillon's Cross and the Old Youghal Road. The Government will not give the northside a hospital, a ring road, an accident and emergency department for children, clean water or a regional park, but it will give the northside a second prison. We are sick and tired of being treated like second-class citizens. We do not want a second prison. Build it somewhere else. We have one prison in The Glen. How can the Government justify building a second prison in the middle of a residential area? It is wrong and a betrayal of the people of The Glen and the promises that were made.

There has been huge investment in the northside of Cork by this Government and the previous Government. There has been huge investment and regeneration in the Deputy's area, which he has ignored. We are progressing the elective hospital in Glanmire.

The planning has not even gone in for the road for the new hospital.

The Deputy needs to go back and forth on the topic. He should not ask a question on policy and legislation if he is going to engage like that. Every Member understands the structure of the debate. The time is up.

I just want to make a point about the northern distributor road. One of the most important companies in the country and in Europe, Apple, has 6,000 people employed in the northside. We are going to facilitate the people of the northside.

I asked a question and it was never answered.
