Estimates for Public Services 2026: Messages from Select Committees

Summary

The statements marked Seachtain na Gaeilge by praising the language as a living part of Irish identity while also focusing on practical gaps in public services, education and housing. The Minister highlighted new funding, the public service Irish action plan, language standards, digital supports, and stronger backing for the Gaeltacht, including jobs, planning, learner schemes and community groups. Opposition speakers welcomed the renewed interest in Irish but argued the Government is not doing enough on Gaeltacht housing, Irish-medium education, third-level provision and rights in State services. Several deputies urged people to use whatever Irish they have and to back structural measures, not just annual celebrations.
