I am advised by the Irish Prison Service that the information requested by the Deputy is provided in the table below. At 31 March 2026, there were 3,434 Prison Officers serving in the Irish Prison Service.

The following information should also be noted by the Deputy.

• Prison officers recruited prior to 30 April 2004 who have 30 years of actual service can retire between the age of 50 and up to before their 55th birthday.

• Any prison officer may retire at any time from their 55th birthday and up to before their 62nd birthday regardless of service.

• Prison Officers must retire, at the latest, on their 62th birthday, the age of mandatory retirement for prison officers.

• Prison officers can retire due to ill health retirement at any stage of their service. Ill health retirement is only granted on foot of a recommendation from the Chief Medical Officer.
