Storm Chandra on 27th January 2026 and in the days immediately after, caused flooding to many towns, businesses and homes, particularly along the East and South East coast of Ireland. I saw first-hand the devastation that this event caused when I visited the locations, including in Enniscorthy, county Wexford impacted by this flood event.

The town of Enniscorthy has a long history of flooding, including in 2000 and 2015 and more recently during Storm Chandra. I saw at first hand the devastation that the flood caused to businesses along the quays, residents and the wider community when I visited Enniscorthy on the 29th January 2026. During that visit, I confirmed the Government’s commitment to provide a flood relief scheme for Enniscorthy not just to the some 50 properties that were affected by the recent flooding but the 326 properties at risk from flooding in Enniscorthy. I do not underestimate the impact that repeated flooding is having on the town of Enniscorthy.

The Government immediately responded by introducing a range of supports for those affected by the flood. While work is continuing to progress on a flood relief scheme for Enniscorthy, Wexford County Council was invited to set out a range of interim measures that may help mitigate the impact from future flood events, pending the completion of the main scheme.

I met with the Chief Executive Wexford County Council and some other members of the Council's senior management team on 2nd March to discuss and review potential interim measures for locations in county Wexford. The Council has recently submitted a business case for proposed interim measures for Enniscorthy, Bunclody, Bridgetown, Wexford Town and Rosslare Strand. This is currently being reviewed by my Office and I hope, shortly, to inform the Council of the outcome of this review.
