Affordable housing at Richmond Village
Naoise Ó Muirí asks the Taoiseach to promote affordable-purchase housing and strengthen the LDA’s mandate at the 779-home Richmond Village development. The Taoiseach supports the LDA’s broader housing role but avoids prescribing the tenure mix at individual sites.
It was good to welcome the Taoiseach to Fairview yesterday for the Land Development Agency, LDA, sod turning at Richmond Village, which involves 779 homes within a close shout of the city centre. The tenancy mix has not yet been determined. Does the Taoiseach agree that affordable homes for purchase is probably the best way to give citizens a stake in their communities? Does he agree that while the LDA has this mandate, in theory it probably could be strengthened further, although it will involve resourcing? Will he encourage the LDA to work towards a maximum amount of affordable-purchase housing at the Richmond Village site?

I do not want to get into specific interventions in terms of mixed tenure or the approach at any given site of the LDA. We have indicated to the LDA that it can do more than social and affordable housing and move into the private-provision area as well to get a broader mix. It is a very good development, with 779 homes. Many big developments are now coming under the aegis of the LDA. It really is the key national intervention in housing at the moment. Thousands upon thousands of houses are under its stewardship right now, and thousands more are in the pipeline. As it evolves, I see as flexible and broad a mix as possible. I am sure the LDA will take on board what has been said in respect of the Richmond Village site.
