Cost of living and electricity prices
Mairéad Farrell accused the Taoiseach of being out of touch with the hardship facing workers and families, focusing on soaring electricity prices. The exchange became heated, with the Taoiseach rejecting the charge and both sides trading interruptions.
The Taoiseach has been in the Dáil since before I was born and I am beginning to think he has become so out of touch that he does not see the hardship facing ordinary workers and families. Every single day in Galway, people tell me that the cost of living is too high and that the Government is doing too little. Then, today, we hear that we have the highest electricity prices in the EU, an outstanding 40% above the EU average. Why has the Taoiseach allowed this? Does he not meet people who cannot pay their electricity bills or afford home heating oil? Does he not speak to those people who struggle to fill their cars with petrol or diesel or to renters who can barely keep a roof over their heads? How can the Taoiseach stand over a situation where in a wealthy country with record surpluses, life is no longer affordable for ordinary people? What is he going to do about electricity prices?
