The Government is appalled by the treatment of illegally detained participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, including Irish citizens. The Taoiseach has written to the President of the European Council to express his grave concern about the shocking treatment of EU citizens, noting that the treatment of the participants of the Flotilla is yet another expression of Israel’s disregard for the rule of law, and as such forms part of a pattern of behaviour that the Government has consistently argued requires an appropriate response by the EU. My Department worked to ensure every available consular support was provided to all our citizens, and remained in close contact with their families in Ireland throughout. The safety and welfare of Irish citizens remained our absolute priority at all times.
Ireland strongly welcomed political agreement at the May Foreign Affairs Council on a package of sanctions against violent Israeli settlers and entities, as well as leading Hamas figures, under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. However, we believe that further action is required. Ireland has been vocal in its support for additional sanctions and welcomed proposals from the European Commission last September to sanction extremist Israeli ministers and violent settlers.
The adoption of sanctions at the EU-level require unanimity and Ireland has consistently and strongly urged our fellow Member States to support these proposals.
It remains the Government’s preference that collective action would be taken at EU level. This will increase their reach and impact.
