Derelict Courts Service building in Tuam

Summary

Peter Roche criticised the prolonged dereliction of a Courts Service building in central Tuam and sought its refurbishment. The Taoiseach agreed to raise it with the Justice Minister and said the Department and local authority should resolve the building’s condition.

The Courts Service owns a building in the heart of Tuam that has been derelict for the past 15 years. As part of the National Development Plan 2018 to 2027, reference was made to the possibility of it being refurbished at the end of that period. We are in the middle of 2026 and there is no sign of that. Dereliction should not be encouraged. In particular, State-owned buildings should not be left in that state right in the heart of the town of Tuam in east Galway.

Comment on this

I will talk to the Minister for justice. Obviously, there is a capital programme for the refurbishment of courts. The Deputy is saying this is a derelict building and I presume it is still owned by the Department. Therefore, it, along with the local authority, should work to get this resolved.
