Hildegarde Naughton Minister for Education and Youth Fine Gael

I propose to take Questions Nos. 778, 884, 887, 894, 919, 920 and 921 together.

The school referred to by the Deputy submitted a revised application to my department in late 2024 for capital funding under the additional school accommodation scheme for the provision of 4 mainstream classrooms, 2 special education classrooms and 3 special education tuition rooms.

The department has engaged extensively with the school authority regarding this proposed project including more recently, a meeting between department officials and school representatives. The Department is proposing to prioritise the progression of 2 mainstream and 2 special classes and include within the remit of the design team the master-planning of the site for a subsequent phase of development at the school. The school’s preference is for modular delivery of the project. This prioritised component of the proposed brief will enable the school to open 2 special classes and accommodate two mainstream classes which are currently accommodated through temporary arrangements.

The department is anxious to support the school in expediting the delivery of this accommodation as soon as possible and now require the school’s agreement to proceed in advance of a department-led prioritisation process under the NDP Implementation Plan. This process involves engagement with key stakeholders and individual schools and will ultimately inform the next tranches of programme rollout.
