Castolin Eutectic strike

Summary

Paul Murphy raised the strike at Castolin Eutectic and said the company was refusing to implement a Labour Court recommendation on redundancy. The Taoiseach said that where parties engage with the Labour Court or WRC, awards should be accepted and implemented.

Workers at Castolin Eutectic have been out on strike for three days now. They are due to go on strike again next week for five days. This is about eight workers being made redundant. The company agreed to go to the Labour Court but has since refused to implement the Labour Court's recommendation of 1.5 weeks per year of service on top of statutory redundancy. The cost of this to the company is minimal. It will be €30,000 or so. This is a company generating over €300 million annually in sales. It is owned by a venture capitalist company, Paragon Partners, which manages about €2.4 billion. Does the Taoiseach agree that this very wealthy company should at the very least abide by the recommendation of the Labour Court and pay the workers a half-decent redundancy?

Comment on this

First of all, I thank the Deputy for raising the issue. I do not have the specifics of the Labour Court recommendation but where people participate in and engage with the Labour Court, or the Workplace Relations Commission, WRC, acceptance and implementation of awards should follow that engagement and participation.
