Health Strategies

453. Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice asked the Minister for Health following on from the recently published, National Diabetes Strategy, when she will ensure that all individuals with all types of diabetes, including more complex cases such as those who have had a pancreatectomy, will be catered for under the HSE; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The https://assets.gov.ie/static/documents/a41e7d5d/Diabetes_Policy_and_Services_Review_-_A_Strategy_for_Better_Care.pdfwas launched on the 21st of May.

This is Ireland’s first national strategy for diabetes, marking a major milestone in diabetes care in Ireland. The intention for the strategy was to establish a coordinated, national approach to diabetes care, and a clear pathway to improve diabetes services for all people living with diabetes.

The report provides a detailed assessment of our current diabetes services and sets out series of recommendations and actions to improve diabetes care delivery across all age groups in acute, primary and community settings. The recommendations cover four key themes:

• Service Development

• Affordability and Access to care

• Better support for people living with diabetes

• Digital Healthcare

The HSE is currently working to develop an implementation plan to ensure that the recommendations are followed through at national level and throughout the Health Regions.
